Pipe Diameter Sizing Calculator

Size a continuous hydraulic inside diameter from flow, length, Darcy friction factor and allowable major headloss, then optionally check a selected diameter.

Continuous hydraulic minimum only. Major friction loss only; no catalog-size selection.

Methodology

Darcy-Weisbach diameter sizing

Starting from hƒ=f(L/D)(V²/2g) and V=4Q/(πD²), TOOL-011 solves D=[8fLQ²/(gπ²hƒ)]^(1/5).

Interpretation

The result is a continuous hydraulic minimum diameter for the supplied allowable major friction loss. It is not a commercial pipe-size recommendation.

Worked example

Q=0.05 m³/s, L=100 m, f=0.020 and allowable hƒ=2.0 m gives 0.183249127 m and velocity 1.895816475 m/s.

Selected-pipe check

A selected diameter reuses the frozen TOOL-010 Darcy-Weisbach engine to compare selected major headloss with the allowance. The machine-readable status basis is major-headloss-allowance-only. The required diameter is also cross-checked through the frozen TOOL-010 engine.

Limitations

This V1 is major friction loss only. No minor losses, static head, residual pressure, velocity-rule compliance, commercial size series, pump duty or network hydraulics are included.
